Natural hot springs ring Lake Akan, creating warm areas along its shores which, in Hokkaido's bitter cold winters, remain unfrozen. These strips of warm water along its shore provide the perfect refuge for Whooper Swans to gather for their wintering site. These swans are so big and heavy that their legs cannot support their weight
